Skills Needed To Be An Effective Coach Or Facilitator

#1 Skill – Plan Develop clear outcomes (goals); Designs an agenda and select group processes on the basis of those outcomes; clarify ground rules; learn about the group members ahead of time; and use appropriate tools, such as visual aids or meeting software.
#2 Skill – Listen Listen to what the group is saying and make an effort to make sense out of it; clarify goals, terms, and definitions; reiterate participant responses; remember previous comments to reconnect information; and help organize information into themes.
#3 Skill – Be flexible Adapts the agenda or meeting activities on the spot, as needed; adapt personal style to the group and tries new things.
#4 Skill – Focus Have a definite direction and know where to go next in the agenda; clearly communicate the task to the group; and keep the group’s comments relevant to the desired outcome.
#5 Skill – Encourage participation Draw out individuals by asking questions; get people involved early on; control dominant people to ensure equal participation; provide anonymity and confidentiality when needed; acknowledge and be open to the group’s contributions; use humor, games, music, and play to enhance an open, positive environment.

#14 Skill – Present information well Give explicit instructions; uss clear and concise language in presenting ideas; give the group written information such as handouts and printouts; provide research and background information; present models and framework clearly; and make important information visible on flip charts or overhead transparencies.
